FTIR Retroreflector Corner Cube Array

Accurate, Reliable, Rugged

A corner cube mirror is exactly how it is described – a mirror consisting of three mirror surfaces oriented to resemble the inside corner of a cube. When all three surfaces are exactly orthogonal to each other, an incoming ray of light is reflected back parallel to its original path. Unlike a simple flat mirror, however, the corner cube mirror can do this with a wide range of incoming beam angles, allowing for high flexibility in alignment. This leads to this type of mirror being termed a retroreflector.

Corner Cube Mirror Benefits:

  • Reliable and Accurate

    • When many retroreflectors are arranged into an array, an additional benefit is that the incident divergent light is actually made to reconverge, resulting in excellent energy capture of the transmitted light.

    • This allows open-path spectroscopic systems, such as FTIR, UV-DOAS, and TDL’s, to use a monostatic arrangement to good effect. IMACC has a patented technique for producing high accuracy corner cube mirrors, and this allows for cost-effective production of these mirrors.

    • There are many applications besides spectroscopy for these mirrors! IMACC currently offers three standard sizes of retroreflector arrays mounted in mild steel enclosures with side shield that hold the lid open, but custom sizes can be built for your application. Contact us today for a quote!

Corner Cube Mirror Specifications:

  • Material: Retros are glass with gold coating, enclosure is mild steel
  • Sizes:  30, 60, and 95 element arrays
  • Dimensions:  30 & 60 element enclosures are 24" x 24" x 7", 95 element enclosure is 30" x 30" x 9" (With the lid closed)
  • Surface Quality:  Each flat mirror surface has a surface flatness of λ/5 per inch at 633nm
  • Clear Aperture Types:  Individual corner cube ; overall array
    • Overall Array: 
      • 30 element: ~18" diameter
      • 60 element: 22.5" x 20" diameter
      • 95 element: 28.5" x 25" diameter

Corner Cube Mirror Arrays:

  • 30 Element Retroreflector Array

    • When used with an IMACC Open-Path FTIR, this array can be used to monitor a path up to 150m long. Average angular divergence of array < 80 arcseconds.

  • 60 Element Retroreflector Array

    • When used with an IMACC Open-Path FTIR, this array can be used to monitor a path up to 400m long. Average angular divergence of array < 30 arcseconds.

  • 95 Element Retroreflector Array

    • When used with an IMACC Open-Path FTIR, this array can be used to monitor a path up to 600m long. Average angular divergence of array < 20 arcseconds.
